Your Year is 5% Over Before It Even Began

January often brings a sense of fresh beginnings and abundance of time - as if our road stretches on forever with endless possibilities.

And it’s indeed early in the game based on the three most common frames of time:

  • Month: January is a slow time of the year. The days are short, the nights are long and cold. It takes us a week or two just to get back into the groove of things after the holidays.

  • Quarter: Some companies are just getting started with their annual review process. A lot of planning, not a lot of execution yet. What’s the hurry? We still have over two months to accomplish our targets, assuming we’ve even determined them at this point.

  • Year: This is the longest frame of all. With this lens, it seems like we have the rest of the year to work on our aspirations. Besides - didn’t we just finish the previous year?

Then I had an epiphany while meditating last week that put things into perspective for me.

At that time, we were 11 days into January, which meant that the year was already 3% over. By the time this article is published, it will have increased to 5%!

This realization nearly broke me out of meditation as I realized just how fast time moves, and how little of it we really have.

If my goal this year is to reach 100k YouTube subscribers and $100k in revenue from coaching, then I’m already behind in building my business.

Not only that, I now have 5% less time to:

  • Get into martial arts

  • Start a podcast

  • Travel with my family and friends

My intention with this mental framing isn’t to freak you out, but rather to give you a kick in the pants to go pursue the things you’ve always wanted to do.

Don’t know what that looks like? Then I’d recommend doing the  Empowering Mind Maps challenge  or take a quick glance at  13 Actions to Thrive this Year .

I’d love to hear from you:

  • What do you hope to accomplish with the remaining 95% of this year?
