ChatGPT + Mind Maps

In our ever-expanding MMN community, I often come across intriguing business questions. Recently, a member sought advice on structuring a presentation on Digital Twins using mind maps.

Instead of answering her question manually (and because I don’t know anything about Digital Twins), I decided to ask my robot intern ChatGPT to create a mind map based on the context she provided, hoping to see how well it could handle the task.

Here's what happened…

I then turned the outline ChatGPT made into the mind map below using iThoughtsX. If you’re curious, here’s the complete Loom walkthrough.

In a nutshell, it produced ~80% of what I would've done plus more because it understood what digital twins were (thanks to the Internet!). The job of the human editor (that’s you and me) is to narrow the scope of the AI output, and then in Mind Map mode, refine the format and sequence of the slides.

I should also add the outline that ChatGPT made is geared towards educating an audience about Digital Twins - much like a whitepaper. If the original intent was for management decision making, so the objectives are quite different.

For kicks, I asked GPT to redo the map from the perspective of a business analyst helping executives make decisions on using Digital Twins:

Here's what it produced:

  • Digital Twin Decision-Making

    1. Business Needs 1.1. Efficiency improvement 1.2. Cost reduction 1.3. Enhanced decision-making 1.4. Faster product development

    2. Potential Applications 2.1. Manufacturing 2.1.1. Production optimization 2.1.2. Predictive maintenance 2.2. Supply Chain Management 2.2.1. Inventory optimization 2.2.2. Demand forecasting 2.3. Facility Management 2.3.1. Energy efficiency 2.3.2. Space utilization 2.4. Product Development 2.4.1. Design improvements 2.4.2. Prototype testing

    3. Implementation Considerations 3.1. Integration with existing systems 3.2. Required technology investments 3.3. Data security & privacy 3.4. Adoption costs

    4. Evaluation Metrics 4.1. ROI 4.2. Time to value 4.3. Process improvements 4.4. Competitive advantage

    5. Best Practices 5.1. Establish clear objectives 5.2. Prioritize use cases 5.3. Develop a proof-of-concept 5.4. Plan for scalability

Not bad. I thought the implementation considerations and metrics were a good call, as was the emphasis on cost and benefit analysis. Any of these "nodes" can be further explored and expanded.

Overall, a VERY impressive demo of what GPT can do! This experiment not only showcased the power of mind maps in structuring complex information but also demonstrated the exciting potential of AI tools like ChatGPT in enhancing our understanding and decision-making in new fields.
